The Monster by Slate Digital
Review by Damien Walsh
Slate Digital have recently released a FREE dynamic plugin called "The Monster". This plugin is based on a vintage FET like the 1176, all buttons in mode. I've spent some time playing around with it and I'm really loving it. I found this plugin great for adding bite to drum mixes and guitars using a parallel compression bus.
Let's look at a few features...
The first thing I noticed and was very happy about was the high pass filter. A lot of times in a drum group the kick will initiate the compression a little earlier than you want so the HPF allows you to dial a bit of that out. Along with that the "Punch" button in the centre allows you to retain the attack. Another great feature is the high frequency detection. The HF detection is great for a drum room mix to mellow out the high end cymbals and avoid a lot of EQ tinkering.
In the video below I've taken a basic Logic Pro Drummer track and flicked through some of the preset options to give you a good idea how it might sound on a drum bus. I've also done the same with a bass riff to show how The Monster can really fatten up those bass tones!
Overall I found this was a very well thought out plugin, as are all things created by Steven Slate. The HPF and HF detection make it a lot more versatile.
